The Asbury Retreat & Ministry Center has its roots in the tradition of "Camp Meeting", when Christians in the Methodist tradition gathered for spiritual renewal. In 1873, Methodist churches from the Genesee Conference held their first camp meeting on Silver Lake. Originally named Camp Wesley, the organization soon became known as the Silver Lake Assembly and later the Silver Lake Institute. In 1945, the property where the Asbury Retreat & Ministry Center now exists was purchased and a master plan was developed to begin a Methodist Camp and Retreat Center. A fund drive resulted in a business center (now the Snack Shack), and the cedar cabinets. In the 1950's, Batavia Cabin and Russell Lodge were added and in the 1960's, Mabuce Cabin was built. In 1959, the property became known as Camp Asbury. The Manor House dining hall was replaced in 1984 by Koinonia Inn and the new Wilmott Lodge was added in the 1990's. Today, dedicated Christians have donated funds to continue inproving Asbury's facilities. Beckwith Cabin was completed in 2004 and work is almost completed on the additional meeting room in Wilmott Lodge. Asbury is one of two Retreat Centers owned and operated by the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church.
